Investigations
What is an investigation?
An investigation is an inquiry into circumstances surrounding an allegation or incident. Loss/fraud investigations are allegations of impropriety resulting in a loss. These investigations are conducted to determine the extent of the fraud, the amount of loss, what control weaknesses existed and will recommend any corrective action.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Investigator at Duke conducts inquiries and/or investigations for the President, Chancellor, University Counsel, The Provost, and Department Heads regarding sensitive and confidential administrative and personnel matters which may have an adverse impact on the University or Health System and their reputation. The investigator reviews allegations or other indicators of fraud theft and embezzlement in collaboration with University Counsel’s Office and Public Safety and follows through to trial if necessary. The investigator also serves as a resource for internal auditors regarding fraud theft prevention and detection.
Reporting
The results of investigations are provided to Duke Administration and others who have a need to know. Reports may be prepared for the Audit Committees regarding the status of the fraud theft prevention and detection program. The Investigator will meet with University Officers and senior administrators on a regular basis to discuss the status of ongoing investigations, suggest recommended courses of action, and follow up.
